 Highlights and Hunter Wellies

It's just a haircut and some shoes

There are two types of mother in the West Country as far as my Yorkshire lass eyes can see; the yummy and the slummy. I don't mean to sound snobby but it appears you either join the cliquey set that meet for coffees and babyccinos or you don't.

It strikes me that this is high school all over again but while I wasn't one of the cool girls back then I'm certainly not the shy awkward girl I once was. I own designer shoes, I throw dinner parties, I've seduced men. My greasy flat hair is now bouncy and shiny, my skin is clear and I wear contact lenses. My being a geek was what attracted my intelligent and charming husband. As an adult woman I'm educated, travelled and loved. I have a car, a house, all the stuff I wanted as a lonely teenager pining over Dawson's Creek.

For a decade I've avoided cliquey women and made real friends. I've not overly worried about those that didn't like me because there were plenty that did. But I am going to be the new girl at school again. Even my friends with kids can't help me as they live some distance away.

I'm going to need some day to day girl support and I want to join the yummy crowd. They seem to have more fun and they have better clothes! My husband makes reasonable money and I am a freelancer with completely flexible hours. Sure I'll be back to work but I'll also be able to have playdates with wine in the garden with discussions of what new products best erase the stretchmarks.

It shouldn't be too hard. It's just a haircut and some shoes!

(Once I'm pregnant that is)
